Trade through the Port of Newcastle in the second half of 2009 was greater than in the corresponding period of 2008 despite the impacts of the global economic downturn. A total of 51,997,708 tonnes of imports were registered by the port for July-December, which was 2.4 million tonnes more than for 2008. Coal exports made up 49,169,692 of this total. Other figures were: Grains 570,503 (up to 504,258 tonnes), Fuels 159,696, Alumina/petroleum coke 861,662 tonnes. An estimated $5 billion of investment in new port and rail infrastructure is planned for next four years. - Hunter Business Chamber
